How we make free computer recycling work as a business
Reducing our carbon footprint
Twice a month we send out the dates for the areas we are collecting in over the next 4-6 weeks. This email is sent out to all our customers who have requested it. If you wish to join the list, please go to our “Contact Us” page or put your email address in the box at the bottom of this page and press SEND DATES. For the published calendar, we collect only on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from pre-booked customers. We collect from all other areas of the UK on Thursday and Friday depending on quantities. We use route mapping software to plot the most efficient journey possible. This will save fuel and reduce our carbon footprint.
Helping us to continue offering a free service
It is important to note that we are a self-funded company, we do not have charity status or investors. We completely rely on the equipment we collect to have some residual value in it. We try to avoid charging customers for collections but in some cases the equipment we are asked to collect will cost us to recycle and a small charge will need to be applied. Our downstream recycling partners do not offer a free recycle service and in order to be compliant ourselves we use a UK based AATF (Approved Authorised Treatment Facility).
Making use of the equipment
Everything we collect is unloaded into a quarantine area and is sorted and assessed. All data bearing devices are removed and all data is destroyed. Every item that has identifying tags or tattoos will have them removed during the assessment phase. Further product cleansing is done during the testing phase to make it completely impossible to identify the company the equipment came from.
Taking care of what we collect
The equipment we collect is carefully loaded onto our vehicle to reduce the possibility of damage. We wrap our screens to protect them in transit and place other smaller items into our crates.
A complete solution to asset disposal
All organisations have a duty of care when disposing of computer equipment, so choosing the wrong partner to manage your IT disposal can not only damage the reputation of your organisation if not done correctly but you could face fines due to the legislation surrounding responsible recycling.
WEEE-RecycleIT operate a zero to landfill policy, we are licensed by the Environment Agency (EA) and are up to date with the latest regulations. We are fully insured for onsite and offsite activities, and all our staff are DBS checked.
Our whole business model is designed to make our customers compliant with their computer recycling obligations, and from the very moment we are contacted we are fully committed to ensuring this is the case.
